The term "419" is contextually and socially derived/coined from the Nigerian Criminal Code Act, 1916, specifically Section 419, which deals with Obtaining Goods by False Pretences.Nowadays, the axiom “419” generally refers to a complex list of offences which in ordinary parlance are related to stealing, cheating, falsification, impersonation, counterfeiting, forgery and fraudulent representation of facts.Section 419 of the Criminal Code provides that; "Any person who by any false pretence, and with intent to defraud, obtains from any other person anything capable of being stolen, or induces any other person to deliver to any person anything capable of being stolen, is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for three years. If the thing is of the value of one thousand naira or upwards, he is liable to imprisonment for seven years."The section further provides that "It is immaterial that the thing is obtained or its delivery is induced through the medium of a contract induced by the false pretence.
